08Trip intelligence

The things worth knowing first

When to go

October to March is the ideal window — dry days of 24–32°C, calm seas and full boat and ferry operations, with December and January the most pleasant. April and May are hot and humid (up to 36°C) but quiet and good value. June to September brings heavy South-West monsoon on the Konkan coast: the landscape is spectacularly green but the sea is rough, St Mary's Island ferries are suspended and beach activities are largely closed.

Before you pack

  • St Mary's Island ferries run only in fair weather and are suspended entirely during the monsoon (June–September)
  • Gokarna is a pilgrimage town — modest dress is expected in the temple area and along Car Street
  • Non-Hindus may not be permitted inside the sanctum of Mahabaleshwara Temple; the outer complex is open to all
  • Mobile phones, cameras and leather items are not allowed inside Sri Krishna Matha
  • The Om–Kudle clifftop trail is rocky and unshaded; carry water and wear proper footwear
  • Beaches have no lifeguards — swim only in marked shallow zones and avoid the sea after dark
  • Alcohol is restricted around temple precincts in both Gokarna and Udupi
09Questions

Asked often

Something not covered here? Message us and a planner will answer personally.

Most guests fly into Goa (Dabolim or Mopa) and drive 2.5–4 hrs to Gokarna, or fly into Mangalore and start from Udupi. Gokarna Road and Udupi both sit on the Konkan Railway, so trains from Mumbai, Goa and Mangalore are an easy alternative. All transfers are included in the package.

Yes, with one caveat. The temple and beach sightseeing is comfortable for all ages, but the Om–Kudle clifftop walk and the St Mary's Island landing involve uneven rock. We can substitute a road transfer and a relaxed Malpe Beach afternoon for guests with mobility concerns.

Gokarna is quieter, more spiritual and far less developed. There are no nightclubs or big beach resorts — instead you get cliff-backed coves reached on foot or by boat, a working temple town and shack food. Travellers wanting nightlife should add a Goa extension, which we are happy to build in.

Sightings are common between November and February in the calm morning sea, but they are wild animals and never guaranteed. The beach-hop boat ride to Half Moon and Paradise is included regardless of sightings.

Udupi is the birthplace of an entire vegetarian cuisine — masala dosa, goli baje, neer dosa and the multi-course banana-leaf thali all trace back to the temple kitchens here. Your Day 4 thali is at a heritage restaurant in the temple square, and we can add a coastal Mangalorean seafood dinner on request.

Yes. Murudeshwar is already a halt on Day 3, and a Jog Falls detour (best July–December) can be added as an extra night. Tell us your total days and we will restructure the route with all transfers included.

Light cottons, a hat and strong sunscreen, sandals plus one pair of grippy shoes for the cliff trail, a quick-dry set for the boat ride, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees for temple visits, and a light shawl for early-morning darshan.
